We all know about survival instincts – Darwin introduced this concept into our thinking in many of his books. His earlier books were on survival and territorial instincts. In a co-authored book called The Expression of Emotions, published in 1872, his tries to make sense of the role of emotions – and our social instincts. Yet he had great difficulty making sense of the social side of our humanity. We have made huge leaps forward and now neuroscience is giving us ways to unlock our humanity and give us new ways to make sense of the most important side of our evolution as human beings – how we connect with others in healthy ways.
